I researched every schedule I could find… church, work, baseball, cheer, band, etc. … I finally found a weekend the four of us were all open! I booked a non-refundable mini-vacation to Sea World & Aquatica, San Antonio, TX. The drive would be short enough we could leave after Thursday cheer practice and arrive at our destination in time to get a good night’s rest before a full day of water park fun.
A week before our awaited long weekend of fun, a flaw in my plan was brought to my attention. Really, the one weekend I thought we were free… and there’s a Saturday commitment my daughter must attend. Apparently, I had not looked at the updated cheer calendar. Well, here we go Plan B…that is… after I figure out what plan B is. Thankfully, as I said earlier… we weren’t going too terribly far from home. I mean.. a few hour’s drive is a piece of cake when you’re used to driving 16 to 23 hours in the RV for our shooting events. So.. Plan B: We would drive to San Antonio as planned on Thursday night and spend all day Friday at Aquatica. Saturday morning, my daughter and I would get up super early and drive home for the football scrimmage. Then, we would head back to San Antonio immediately after the game and be back at Aquatica with the boys for the evening. Problem solved.
4:00am after a day at the water park comes very early… ok.. 4am is always very early. But it’s especially early and unwelcomed after a full day of fun in the sun! Up and at ‘em and off we go. 3 Hours & a beautiful sunrise later we arrive at our destination, cheer on the team, grab some lunch, and hit the road again. I plug our destination in to the gps. I’m certain I should know the route by heart after traveling it twice in 48 hours; but, I don’t. And in fact.. why don’t we go a different way? We are in hurry to get there… back with the family.. but, new routes are good. Let’s try a different way. You know… I’m prone to wander…go a new way..
A few hours later I answer my phone and hear my hubby say, “Where are you?”
Me: “On I-10.”
Hubby: “Where on I-10? I tracked your location on your phone … Did you turn the wrong way when you got to Junction?”
Me: “No, I didn’t go through Junction.”
(I’ll spare you the rest of that conversation.)
Let’s just say… our 3 hour trip back took over 4 hours.
I knew I should have gone the familiar way… the way the gps said was the shortest and fastest.. the way my husband went … the way I had been previously.. the way I knew was the best. But, I didn’t, I’m just prone to wander.
I’m kind of a free spirit.. that’s my excuse anyway. I just want to go a new way… see something different. Or , maybe… I’m just queen of doing stuff that makes no sense. I don’t know for sure which is more accurate. I do know I drive my “type A” hubby crazy. But, I will also say… he’d probably be bored without me. He should have known this when we were dating and we’d be headed to my favorite restaurant in downtown Dallas and I didn’t have specific directions to get there. I just said while pointing, “It’s close that tall building over there.” I’d drive and head that direction, wandering around until I finally reached my destination.
As I reflected on this latest “adventure” or “detour”, I’m reminded that when I’m in a hurry to get somewhere it’s best to follow the directions and advice of those who know the way! In my businesses, I have goals. Most definitely it is best to do what successful people are doing. Why would I reinvent the wheel or try to figure things out on my own when someone else has already laid out a proven plan? Perhaps, next time I’m driving to a destination I really need to get to quickly, I’ll remember to take expert advice and go the fastest and shortest proven route!
